It is such a popular event that Saturday night's session is sold out in Greensboro. The ladies free skate event features Rachael Flatt, Mirai Nagasu, Ashley Wagner, former silver medalist Sasha Cohen, and Christinia Gao.

Flatt is actually the reigning US Champion but she will have some stiff competition in grand prix champion Alissa Czisny. Czisny is coming off a superb 2010 season where she not only won the Grand Prix, but she also achieved her career best score in the event.

If Czisny falls, it seems like Flatt would be the favorite to advance. When all is said and done, I think Czisny and Flatt both advance with Czisney winning the US Championship but look for Cohen to be a dark horse to grab one of the spots.

North Carolina 2011 announced a new local partner and local sponsor for the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

"We view the U.S. Figure Skating Championships as a marvelous opportunity for Greensboro and the region," News & Record publisher Robin Saul said.

"Spokane's newspaper, the Spokesman Review, did a fabulous job of covering the 2010 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and we anticipate the same relationship with the News & Record."

Hagan Davis, headquartered in downtown Greensboro, is one of the city's most noted law firms, specializing in a range of legal areas, from litigation to venture capital. "We are delighted to be providing legal services to the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships," Hagan Davis partner Chip Hagan said.

In an event of this caliber, we have to do everything in a first-class, highly professional manner, and of course legal services are an essential part of that."

Greensboro will host the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships on January 22-30, 2011. The event, held annually since 1914, is the nation's most prestigious figure skating event.

Approximately 250 skaters in the novice, junior and senior levels will compete over the course of eight days to become U.S. champions. All-Event, Weekend, Matinee and Evening Ticket Packages are also available.

The U.S. Figure Skating Championships, held annually since 1914, is the nation's most prestigious figure skating event and one of the most televised and most-watched annual sporting events in the country. The 2011 edition marks the first time the U.S. Championships have been hosted in the Carolinas.

As we watch the performances of the women's free Figure Skating tonight on NBC, the costumes the women wear are handmade pieces of art to dazzle the crowd with every move of the athlete.

Based on the structure of the piece, it could be more especially if Swartz crystals are used or a designer like Vera Wang decides to be part of the process.

Spending about $3,000 a year on five costumes, she sells cookies and baked goods to raise cash for her outfits and she hasn't hit the athletic circles the ladies tonight are competing in.

From the audience we see the moves of the athlete and as the body moves, so must the fashion. Each piece of clothing for the women's sport starts with a simple bodice that wraps around the body and builds out from there.

The design of the outfits tonight can be best seen in person, but if you are looking to check out the US Figure Skating Championships on Saturday night, you are out of luck. The news station WFMY is reporting that the coliseum in Greensboro is sold out so the only way you are going to see the fashion on the ice tonight is to watch NBC. Check your local listings for show times in your area.

With Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek and three-time U.S. Men's Champion Johnny Weir sitting out this competitive season, and five-time U.S. Ice Dance Champions Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto retired, one could think the upcoming 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships might be lacking star power.

In fact, all four defending senior national champions from 2010 will be on hand when the skaters glide into action Jan. 22-30 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Defending Ladies Champion Rachael Flatt deferred admission to Stanford University for a year to focus on skating.

Former U.S. Champion Mirai Nagasu, 17, is personality-plus, but she's been battling injury since her outstanding fourth-place finish at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver last February. Local girl Ashley Wagner, 19, from Alexandria, is hungry for a return trip to the World Championships.
