If you have a car or truck with a decal or bumper sticker that you no longer want to be on the vehicle, these tips may help with decal removal from the vehicle without ruining the paint. A heat gun is usually very useful in removing the decals and stickers from a vehicle. If a heat gun is not available, try parking the vehicle so that the decal faces the hot sun in the summer. If this is not possible try using a blow dryer or an iron over a damp towel. You are trying to heat the adhesive under the decal so that it melts and and the solid part of the decal can be removed. Once the adhesive is warm you will need a soft scraper that can be used to lift the edge of the decal off of the paint. A credit card or a plastic putty knife work well. Some people choose a single edge razor blade, although you must be careful that you do not slice the paint of the vehicle. Once you have lifted the edge of the decal, continue peeling as far as possible. You may need to stop and reheat the adhesive if it has cooled. If the decal tears, try heating and lifting the edge again. Eventually, you should be able to get all of the upper portion of the decal off the vehicle. If the decal is something like a pinstripe, you may choose to use a tool made by 3M called a "stripe off tool" It looks like a large eraser that fits into a power drill and erases the pinstripe from the vehicle. It can also be used for small bumper stickers. Once you have removed the decal from the vehicle, there may still be a sticky residue that needs to be removed. If the residue is left on the vehicle, it is likely to attract dust and make a sticky mess. Several solvents can be used to remove the sticky residue. Try some of the suggestions to see if they work for your residue. You should use solvents in a place that has plenty of ventilation. Fumes from solvents can cause many problems including brain damage or death if inhaled. WD-40 is said to be a great solvent for the adhesive on some decals. Others use lighter fluid. Still another choice is a strong solution of rubbing alcohol and dish washing soap. With any of these solvents, you will want to apply and allow the solvent to work a few minutes then wipe off before they have a chance to damage the clear coat on the vehicle. While it was in place, the decal protected the paint underneath. As a result, when you remove the decal, there may be a spot where the finish is actually in better shape under the decal. To make the extra shiny spot less noticeable, wax the vehicle. There are some decals that are not going to come off easily. In fact some will require that you use a grinder to remove the decal and then add a primer coat and repaint the vehicle.
