The Three Sexiest Poems Of All Time

Asking a person to name the sexiest poem they've ever heard is like asking them to name the most beautiful place in the world . the choice is just too vast and, besides, isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? Similarly, poetry in its countless forms is already extremely subjective, so put in to the mix the abstract idea of 'sexiness' or erotic lierature and it becomes an impossibility.

There are more verses about love and romance than there are grains of sand on a beach and, if you take a look at the countless opinion polls on the internet, many of these poems are considered to be sexy.

'Romance' by Edgar Allen Poe is one such poem, referencing very subtly as it does to "forbidden things." Emily Dickinson's 'If those I loved were lost' is also ranked high up in many opinion polls, although a lot of people would find it hard to describe what they thought of as 'sexiness' in its eight lines. Yet more difficult to grasp is 'Skunk Hour' by Robert Lowell, which tells how a man in his prime living in the small town of Maine is unable to find love.

E.E. Cummings is certainly a firm favourite when it comes to sexiness. In his interestingly entitled "because I love you last night", forexample, he delights in using an imagery that rolls and falls similar to the woman of his fantasies, whose "face smile breasts gargled."

"The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock" by T S Eliot, this time referecing a man about to enter old age, is also highly ranked as a sexy poem. Might it be because its opening six lines are written in Italian?

There are poems that seem to resist categorisation. For instance, in one internet poll, Christina Rossetti's narrative 'Goblin Market' is at top of the list. In this lengthy pre-Raphaelite tale, the evil goblins lure Laura and Lizzie with their refrain to "Come buy, come buy, our orchard fruits." What begins as an apparently innocent pastoral verse leads into the girls' precipitous situation, and Lizzie eventually getting overcome by the goblins. Its variety double-entendre references to juicy peaches, plums and figs are mixed in with a menace that results this poem being the topic of many an academic discussion. Is it a feminist poem or a religious allegory? Many individuals would resolutely say it's just plain sexy.

Then there is blatantly erotic writing, which starts with the central idea of romantic poetry and sends it kicking and screaming to the opposite side of the spectrum. Neil Rollinson's poetry, for instance, makes no bones regarding what category it should be in. In 'French', with the eroticism completely unmasked by any of the wordplay used by Rossetti, he refers to "extra-curricular" activities with the private tutor in the "cool expanse of her bed."

Be it erotic or romantic, it seems the discussion about what makes a poem sexy is going to continue for as much time as there is poetry.
